Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana of the Tarot is made up of 56 cards, consisting of 16 Court and 40 Pip cards. The cards are divided into 4 suits, similar to a normal deck of playing cards.

Wands – Also referred to as Rods, Staffs, Batons and Clubs. Wands represent the element of Fire and the key associations of this suit are Career, Travel, Work, Negotiations, Creativity, Growth and Development.

Pentacles - Also referred to as Coins, Disks, Shields and Diamonds. Pentacles represent the element of Earth. Key associations of this suit are Money, Property, Training, Education, Material Possessions and Finances.

Swords – Also referred to as Spades, this suit represent the element of Air. Swords are associated with Tension, Worries, Obstacles, Problems, Setbacks, Confusion and Surgery.

Cups – Also referred to as Vessels, Hearts. The suit of Cups represent the element of Water. Key associations linked to this suit are Emotions, Creativity, Relationships, Romance, Intuitions and Imagination.

The Court Cards – Also referred to as Royal or Person cards, these cards can represent people in your life or aspects of your own personality. If Court cards are predominant in a Tarot reading, it suggests that a number of people are influencing the question you are asking.

  • Pages – Also known as Princesses, Knaves or Daughters, Pages are most closely associated with Communication, Information, Children and Youthful Innocence.
  • Knights – Also known as Princes or Sons, Knights are most closely associated with Restlessness, Energy, Strength. They suggest new people and experiences entering your life.
  • Queens – Also sometimes referred to as Mothers, Queens stand for mature women and often symbolize women of authority or power. They are associated with such traits as Creativity, Nurturing, Love of Nature and Caring.
  • Kings – Kings are father figures and represent mature men of some stature in life. They are less likely to represent situations and are associated with such traits as Leadership and Authority. They may suggest public recognition or recieving of honors and awards.
